Circular Paper: AMATE PAPER: HAND-MADE AND MANUFACTURED FROM TREE BARK! Looks natural, feels natural, is natural: Amate paper is ‘bark paper’ and is made from the bark of ficus trees. You can see it clearly in the photos here: the papers have textures that come from the plant fibres. This natural character is visually enhanced by the woven form of the papers. Amate papers have a special history, by the way: They have been around for many centuries. Amate papers experienced their heyday during the Aztec rule from the 14th to the 16th century. They were so exclusive that they were given as gifts to kings on special occasions. Even today, Amate papers are still something very special in Mexico. The name Amate also has a meaning, of course: The Spanish word ‘amar’ means ‘to love’, and the word “te” means ‘you’.
